Zoya and Obie first met when she arrived at Constance Billard St. Jude's School as a transfer student. She arrived as Julien's seemingly estranged half-sister. Zoya was already familiar with Obie from her time getting to know Julien in secret, whle Obie knew very little about Zoya's personal life as Julien hadn't told him of her conversations with Zoya. The pair instantly hit it off as they both were passionate about social and political change, and had similar views on a lot of topics. They began to hang out alone together as they both longed for a real conversation that wasn't tainted by social media or societal expectations. Obie saw Zoya as a breath of fresh air in the constant cycle of his world. Their connection became romantic after Obie broke up with Julien, which followed a fallout between the two sisters. As they began to date, Julien and her friends conspired to get back at Obie by breaking his realtionship with Zoya. This effort was futile, mainly because Julien realized that Zoya made Obie happy and they could do things together that Julien and Obie couldn't.
Zoya and Obie's relationship was met with ups and downs in the coming weeks, as Gossip Girl labeled them both as cheaters for Obie's quick bounce from one sister to the next, which in turn, made the school look down upon Zoya. Social media played a large role as users mocked Zoya for her unfiltered and realistic ways, while Obie was always prepped and looking like he stepped off a magazine cover. These pressures got to Zoya and she took advice from Luna La, a choice that altered the way she acted around Obie. This almost broke their relationship until they had a tough conversation on whether or not Obie actually wanted to be with someone who was unfilitered like Zoya, or if he just liked the idea of being with someone like her. When her birthday approached, Zoya's feud with Julien escalated to the point where she was cruel to Obie as she found herself distracted in her efforts to destroy her sister. The conspiring turned Obie away from Zoya, as he disliked her newfound attitude and the darker side of her personality.
Obie felt for Zoya when Luna, Monet, and Julien played a cruel video of Zoya being bullied at her former school. Zoya and Julien ultimately made up, as Julien admitted that she would try to move on from Obie and let the pair be happy. As such, she helped the pair rekindle at the party so they could dance together. Things weren't peaceful for long, as Obie's mother arrived and Zoya had her first glimpse at Obie's true nature of passiveness regarding his activisim. Zoya tried to push him to stand up to Helena and speak his truth, while he tried to silence her during dinner. After a fight, Obie made a gesture of good faith that he heard Zoya. He showed up at the protest outside his mother's development. Zoya joined the protest but found him with Julien, who had inserted herself in the couple's drama as of late. Zoya angrily left the protest, though Julien followed after and argued that Obie chose Zoya and not her. Zoya then asked if Julien loved Obie, and Julien admitted that she did. She asked if Zoya loved him but Zoya couldn't give an answer. As she stormed off, Julien returned to the protest and hooked up with Obie afterwards.
Obie tried to contact Zoya in the coming days, but she wasn't sure of his intentions anymore. She had a bad feeling that whenever she interrupted a conversation between him and Julien that they were having a secret conversation. She felt unsure if she should trust her gut or if she was paranoid. She confided in her sister, who lied that the conversations were just about Zoya and the distance Obie felt from her lately. She encouraged Zoya to tell Obie how she really felt. The couple went for a walk in the park together as Zoya reluctantly told Obie that she wanted to make sure they were on the same page with their relationship. She explained that they could break up if his heart wasn't in it, but he assured her it was, even though he was in love with Julien and had just slept with her. Obie blurted out that he loved Zoya and the pair kissed happily in the park. Strangers applauded and the moment felt romantic to Zoya. She gushed about it to Julien after, who tried to let her sister down easy about Obie's tendency to flip-flop on his emotions and choices when feeling pressured. Zoya took this as Julien's attempt to break them up and ceased talking to her for the day. At Thanksgiving dinner, Zoya presented Obie around the house and took him to her room. Now that she knew how he really felt, she wanted to have sex that night for the first time. He agreed and they hugged. Though when Julien learned of this plan, she knew she couldn't let her sister sleep with Obie without Zoya know of their affair. The truth came out over dinner as Zoya realized the tension between Obie and Julien was because they slept together. She broke up with Obie and ended her realtionship with Julien. She could have handled her first love cheating on her, but not with her supposed sister.
